About Korea's NBSAP
Legal basis
Article 7 of the Act on the Conservation and Use of Biological Diversity (Biodiversity Act)
The government shall formulate strategies for conservation of biodiversity and sustainable use of its components.
Implementation period: 5 years
The fifth NBSAP (2024-2028) sets out targets and action plans up to 2030, in line with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF)’s target year.Key elements (Article 7, Paragraph 2 of the Biodiversity Act)
- Status of biodiversity, and the objectives and vision of NBSAP
- Protection and management of biodiversity and its components
- Sustainable use of components of biodiversity
- Response to threats to biodiversity
- Management of species of concern for introduction and alien species that affect biodiversity
- Research and technological development, education and promotion and international cooperation related to biodiversity
- Enhancing ecosystem services and ensuring that the public has access to benefits from ecosystem services
Position of NBSAP
- Korea's NBSAP is the highest-level cross-ministry strategy that outlines policy directions on conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in Korea for the five-year period.
- The NBSAP lays down implementation measures that are based on the 23 global targets for 2030 under the Kunming-Montreal GBF but tailored to national circumstances.
